Something About Family2022
My sister and I haven’t had worthwhile relationships with our fathers. We've only had our mother who tried to fill in the best she could. I learned my life skills from her. We didn’t always see eye to eye but she did the best she could with what she had. Of course, my mother couldn’t have filled in for my father; she just focused on being there. We think of parenting as this fixed system that has to follow some sort of structure,  but it's malleable and will continue to change. This series is a comment on one type of family structure. After seeing Larry Sultan’s Pictures From Home I had the urge to portray the reality of my family. This was uncharted territory for me, but after seeing his perspective of family, I wanted to explore mine.  I focused on everyday moments throughout a typical day, and because I live at home I have constant access to my subjects. The trust that exists between us is revealed in the photographs. I’m showing who we are and how we act. I’m showing what’s behind our closed door.
